Chapter Seven: Sleeping Beauty

Ivy had crossed the entire town until she gave up. “Good grief! Are there no signs that point toward the witch’s residence? What do you want me to do? Sing to the birds?” Frustrated, Ivy stomped her feet on a spot where the snow hadn’t melted yet. The crunching noise eased her irritation, and she pushed her mind to think of a plan.

“Maybe the leaves can help me.” Ivy took out of her pocket the leaves that bore a golden tint. “Show me the way to the one I seek.” The leaves lay unmoving on her palm. Ivy scowled. “Please?” An unexpected breeze whooshed them through her hand and carried the leaves away. Ivy rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Intentions are everything. Yeah, sure. Very good advice, Echo.” Her eyes widened when the leaves formed an arrow. “Hey, wait for me!” Ivy rushed after them when they swerved at the end of the road.

Ivy followed the leaves through alleys, fields and many places that no human would willingly step on. She wondered whether the leaves were toying with her when, suddenly; they flew forward, and she arrived at the abandoned mansion.

Poor Mr. Telor’s pride and joy had suffered at the hands of the demon who had killed the servants to power the spinning wheel. The once opulent mansion stood now in a state of decay.

Well, of course you’d be in such a place, Fox. You wouldn’t want to convenience everyone and find a palace to sleep in. Ivy’s left eye twitched. She shivered when the mansion creaked. A cauldron of bats flew from an open window, and Ivy took a few steps back.

Alright. I just need to get in.

Now that she was at the epicenter of the curse, Ivy was having second thoughts about the whole rescuing thing. She stopped calling Fox a while ago, but her heart told her he was there. Probably feeding the demon with his blood. Weren’t all those gruesome stories the same?

Ivy circled the mansion, looking for ways to sneak in. Despite being fairly new to the magical world, Ivy was not stupid. If she barged in through the front door, nothing good would come of it. Especially since she was unarmed. Golden leaves didn’t count as a weapon.

When she located a loose plank on the back that led to a tunnel, she nodded. That could be the servants’ entrance, perhaps.

Ivy weaved her way through the dusty tunnel, squinting to filter more light. She kept to the middle, her eyes darting from the ceiling to the floor, to avoid any spiders or rats that lurked in the dark. Ivy passed another fallen plank and a breath of relief shaped into a wavering smile, though she paid it with a coughing fit. A small light gleamed at the end of the tunnel. She smothered her coughs in her hands and looked around, but the dark tunnel had suffered no changes.

Plants had made themselves at home, fortifying the mansion no adult could step into without making their presence known.
